Paris Saint-Germain going hard for Nico Williams as Athletic Club receive hint forward may stay

Athletic Club winger Nico Williams may be on holiday in Marbella, but it seems unlikely that it has been a peaceful time for the 22-year-old. The Euro 2024 winner has a number of options on the table for next season, and none of the interested parties are any the wiser as to his next step.

As per Sport though, who reference multiple reports from the Basque Country, Nico Williams has told the club that he will be back in preseason training on the fifth of August, rather than the 12th, as initially specified by the club. This is being taken as a sign by some that he is edging towards staying – it would allow him time to be ready for their first La Liga fixture, against Getafe 10 days later, with two friendlies ahead of that game.

Meanwhile the same outlet still maintain that Barcelona remain confident of that Williams will sign for them. Diario AS on the other hand report that Paris Saint-Germain are upping the ante for him. Coach Luis Enrique knows him well from his time as Spain manager, and Sporting Director Luis Campos is a long-time admirer. The French side have been in touch with his agent, and their offer is likely to dwarf both those of Athletic Club and Barcelona, given they are said to be going hard for Williams.

It’s a major fork in the road for Williams, who was the flavour of the summer in Spain following his exploits at Euro 2024. Thus far it has always been said that his preference has been to remain in his home country, giving Athletic and Barcelona an advantage, but one thing remains certain – nobody outside of his intimate circle, and perhaps even within it, has any clarity on which way Williams will come down.
