Real Madrid defensive problems worsen as 32-year-old suffers setback in injury recovery

Having missed out on the signing of Leny Yoro, Real Madrid have decided not to sign a new centre-back – despite the departures of Nacho Fernandez and Rafa Marin. As things stand, they will only have four senior options for next season: Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, David Alaba and Jesus Vallejo.

However, only three will be available for the start of the new season. Alaba is still recovering from the ACL injury that he suffered last December – he had been projected to return in October, but that will now no longer be the case.

As reported by Relevo, Alaba’s recovery is going slower than expected. Club officials do not believe that he will be back in October, and they’ve now decided not to set a date for his return. It means that Rudiger, Militao and Vallejo will share the workload in central defence for even longer, with Aurelien Tchouameni also an option as cover.

Perhaps surprisingly, this news does not change Real Madrid’s stance of not signing a new centre-back this summer. Re-signing Mario Gila from Lazio is an option that has been considered, but for the time being at least, it will not be explored.
