Barcelona have agreement in place to re-sign veteran midfielder, deal cannot be done now due to FFP issues

Two first team players saw their contracts expire at Barcelona on the 30th of June: Marcos Alonso and Sergi Roberto. Curiously, only Alonso’s departure was announced, despite the fact that Roberto is officially no longer a member of the playing staff at the Catalan giants.

The reason for this is fairly simple: Barcelona want to re-sign Roberto. Sport have reported that an agreement was reached weeks ago for the 32-year-old to return, but the deal cannot be finalised until La Liga approve the return to the 1:1 rule.

Head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco are in agreement that Sergi Roberto deserves a place in next season’s squad, but for now, he cannot re-join. He can’t even train with the Barcelona first team, as the club have forbid him from doing so for legal reasons, as he’s technically not one of their players at this stage.

As a result, Roberto has been using a personal trainer to keep in shape, as he prepares to hold out until his return to Barcelona is approved.
