Barcelona forced to restructure deal after having €60m offer for leading target rejected

While they are prioritising efforts to sign Nico Williams, Barcelona are also working on a deal for another of their top targets for the summer transfer window: Dani Olmo. Sporting director Deco has been tasked with closing the signing of the 26-year-old attacker, who was in spectacular form for Spain at Euro 2024.

RB Leipzig are prepared to sell Olmo, as long as an offer in the region of €60m – the player’s previous release clause – is received. MD have reported that Barcelona did indeed match this amount, but it was rejected.

Barcelona’s offer was an upfront payment of €40m, with €20m in instalments. For Leipzig, that’s not a good enough arrangement, and they want more of the funds in the immediate payment. Deco will continue working on the deal to ensure that Olmo returns to Catalonia this summer.

Despite the well-documented money problems that Barcelona are having, they’ve already committed to spending €118m (Olmo €60m, Williams €58m) this summer, without bringing in any significant funds from player sales. In Olmo’s case, it’s a lot of money for a player that is not absolutely essential, especially when a new defensive midfielder is.
