Spain No.1 Unai Simon could miss four months of action following surgery

Spain star Unai Simon will be sidelined for at least four months after surgery on a persistent wrist injury.

The Athletic Club goal keeper confirmed during Euro 2024 that he was playing through the pain barrier for the good of the squad.

Simon’s performances played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 title win but the decision has been made on his injury.

Despite rumoured interest from the Saudi Pro League, Simon signed a contract extension to remain in Bilbao, before joining up with Spain’s Euro 2024 squad.

However, the prospect of surgery remained an issue, and he will miss the start of the domestic campaign in August.

Estimations on his return are unconfirmed, with a base line of two months before he can train again, and a likely overall absence of four months for club and country.

As per reports from Marca, Simon is not expected to return for Athletic Club until after their mid-season break, meaning he will miss the first half of the La Liga season.

Alongside his absence from club action, Simon will also miss Spain’s six UEFA Nations League games in 2024, which take place from September to November.
