Athletic Club legend Iker Muniain reaches agreement in principle with new club

Athletic Club legend Iker Muniain may well have the move he has dreamed of since deciding to leave Los Leones, although there is still some work to do. The latest reporting is that he has reached an agreement with Argentine giants River Plate.

The 32-year-old was out of contract this summer, and having lifted the Copa del Rey as captain of his boyhood club, decided to leave, albeit having taken on a secondary role under Ernesto Valverde. As a professed fan of El Millionario, that was always suggested as a potential destination. According to Marca, Muniain has reached an agreement in principle on terms with River to sign with them.

However certain things still need to fall into place. Currently River have all five of their foreign player spots occupied, and manager Martin Demichelis is also yet to give the green light on the deal. River would have to move someone on first.

Muniain has already had a unique career at Athletic, and joining River would certainly be an incredible move. While Muniain was no longer a starter for Valverde, his competition was Nico Williams and Oihan Sancet, both of which have been part of the Spain squad in the last few months, and in the winger’s case, playing a starring role at Euro 2024.
