Real Madrid announce fresh contract for iconic midfielder

It was no secret that after a year in which his continuity has been cast into doubt all season, Luka Modric would end up continuing at the Santiago Bernabeu. A day after Kylian Mbappe was presented to the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid have confirmed a contract extension for Modric.

As is customary for those over thirty at Real Madrid, Modric has extended his deal by one-year. The 38-year-old will begin his 13th year at the club looking to build on his 26 trophies and 534 games. Modric is likely to become the oldest player to play for Real Madrid this season, and could also become the most decorated too.

It remains to be seen how Carlo Ancelotti will set up his side this coming season, with Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni likely to start. The usual third spot in midfield will be up for grabs if Jude Bellingham continues to play further forward, between Eduardo Camavinga and Modric. The Croatian veteran was highly useful down the stretch for Ancelotti last year, but less often as a starter.
