Euro 2024-winning Spain defender emerges as shock transfer option for Real Madrid

On Wednesday, it was all-but confirmed that Real Madrid have missed out on the signing of Leny Yoro. The 18-year-old defender has agreed to join Manchester United, after Los Blancos failed to submit an acceptable offer to Lille. Club bosses must now begin work on identifying alternative targets, and a rather surprising one has emerged.

According to El Mundo (via Sport), Real Madrid are considering a move for Aymeric Laporte. The 30-year-old was in fantastic form for Spain at Euro 2024, and although he has been playing for Al-Nassr since last summer, he showed that he is more than capable of playing at the highest level.

Laporte, who has been linked with Atletico Madrid in recent weeks, would be a relatively low-cost signing for Real Madrid, and he’d also help with the club’s homegrown quota for their La Liga and Champions League registration. Kepa Arrizabalaga, Nacho Fernandez and Joselu Mato have all departed this summer, meaning that there is a distinct lack of Spanish players in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

Laporte would also arrive as a left-footed centre-back option, which would be very welcome for Real Madrid considering David Alaba’s absence. They could certainly do far worse than signing the former Athletic Club and Manchester City defender.
