Pedri injury update after Barcelona carry out medical tests – recovery time may be better than first feared

It was a sobering moment for all of Spain and Barcelona when Toni Kroos crashed through the back of Pedri in the Euro 2024 quarter-final, with the 21-year-old being forced off shortly after. Pedri suffered a sprain of his knee ligament.

According to Diario AS, after the tests were carried out today, Pedri is set to be absent for five more weeks. He suffered the injury over a week ago, and the general recovery time is usually 6-8 weeks, and while neither Spain nor Barcelona were keen to make a recovery timetable, both agree he should be back after five weeks.

Pedri will miss all of preseason as a result, but could be available for their second La Liga game of the season against Athletic Club at home on the 24th of August, missing the first one against Valencia away from home on Matchday 1.

The Blaugrana then have two more games before the international break, facing Rayo Vallecano away from home before hosting Real Valladolid. In normal circumstances, Barcelona might consider not using him until after that international break, but as things stand, only Ilkay Gundogan in midfield is due to be present and fit. Frenkie de Jong may still be recovering, while Gavi is out and Fermin Lopez is at the Olympics with Spain.
