Alvaro Morata’s imminent move caught Atletico Madrid cold

Spain captain Alvaro Morata is delivering the Euro 2024 back to the country after La Roja’s victory over England in Berlin, but he is likely to be on the move shortly. AC Milan are set to activate his €15m release clause in the next 48 hours.

As revealed by Matteo Moretto has revealed on Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing, it’s a move that has come out of the blue for Los Rojiblancos. Before today, they had received no contact from Morata or Milan, with the former informing Los Colchoneros on Monday that Milan were planning to pay his release clause and he was intending to leave.

Prior to that, Atletico had had no indication from Morata that he wanted to leave or would be doing so. It looked as if he would remain at the club just a few weeks ago, when he posted on his Instagram that he was looking forward to playing with Atletico next season, and winning something in an Atletico side. He had given the green light to Al-Qadsiah, but backed out of a move at the last minute.

However recently, Milan Sporting Director Zlatan Ibrahimovic has made several calls to Morata persuading him to make the move back to Serie A. Nevertheless, Atletico do not have anything currently in the pipeline to replace Morata, as they believed he was staying. They were in talks with Girona for Artem Dovbyk earlier in the summer, but talks stalled over the cost of the deal.
