Probably the most important area that Villarreal needed to address this summer was in central defence. 65 goals were conceded by the Yellow Submarine in La Liga last season – a number that is completely unsustainable if they are to compete at the business end of the table going forward.
Fortunately for Marcelino Garcia Toral, Villarreal are about to land their first centre-back of the summer. As revealed by Fabrizio Romano, they are very close to completing a deal to sign Willy Kambwala from Manchester United.

Kambwala, 19, impressed during his 10 appearances for Man United last season, but given that they are targeting multiple centre-back signings of their own, he’d be far down the pecking order at Old Trafford going forward. Villarreal will pay €10m to sign the French starlet, and a buy-back clause will also be included in the deal.
It’s safe to say that this is a very exciting signing for Villarreal, and Kambwala is unlikely to be the only centre-back to arrive at the Ceramica this summer.
