Shock U-turn: Barcelona outcast to remain at club after Hansi Flick call

Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu looked as if to all intents and purposes as if he was on the way out of the club this summer, with some reporting that he had even asked to leave. Under Xavi Hernandez it became clear that the 32-year-old was no longer trusted, but Hansi Flick is willing to give him a second shot.

Romeu had been heavily linked with a return to Girona, from whence he came, but the Catalan side only wanted to bring him back on a free, after a €3.4m move last summer. As per MD though, Flick has decided to hold onto Romeu this summer.

The German coach believes he can play a role in the squad, and excepting a good offer for him, he will remain at the club next season. It has been made clear to Romeu that he is part of Flick’s plans next season, as he believes his qualities could be useful in midfield, in particular his strength. Flick is keen to have plenty of depth in his squad, and consider last season’s Barca Atletic captain Marc Casado an option too. It is also noted that his exit would do little for Barcelona’s salary limit.

If Romeu does indeed stay at the club, it looks more likely that Sergi Roberto will not return to the club. The captain is awaiting a call from Barcelona over his future with his contract having expired at the end of last month – the Blaugrana have told him that they will try to bring him back if they have space in their salary limit, but as time passes, that remains uncertain.
