Spain vs England Preview

Spain have been hugely impressive on their way to the final and should possess far too much quality for England in Berlin.

Luis de la Fuente’s side were drawn in a supposedly tricky group in the opening phase, but had little difficulty finishing ahead of Italy, Croatia and Albania.

Georgia gave them a minor scare by taking the lead in the last-16, but Spain roared back with four unanswered goals to progress to the quarter-final.

They recovered from a goal down against France to win 2-1, although the margin of victory could have been greater had they taken their chances.

A final clash with England stands in the way of Spain winning Euro 2024, and it would be a brave move to back against them achieving the feat.

They have won five and drawn one of their nine meetings with England since the turn of the century and look a good bet to improve that record this weekend.

Gareth Southgate’s side were unimpressive in the group stage, picking up just five points from their three matches against Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia.

They produced a dismal performance against Slovakia in the last-16 but managed to sneak through courtesy of goals by Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.

England needed penalties to see off Switzerland in the quarter-final, while a last-minute winner by Ollie Watkins ended the Netherlands’ hopes in the last four.

Although the Three Lions have done well to reach this stage of the competition, it is tough – based on what they’ve shown – to imagine them troubling this talented Spanish team.

If England can unlock the copious amounts of talent at their disposal, then we will have a game on our hands, but six games in, that has only happened in fits and bursts, on the side of the draw unanimously deemed much weaker.
