Real Madrid are not expected to part ways with any more of their core first team players, following the departures of Toni Kroos, Nacho Fernandez and Joselu Mato. However, it cannot be completely ruled out, as for the second consecutive summer, there is building speculation over the future of Andriy Lunin.
Last summer, Lunin looked likely to move on after being deemed not good enough by Real Madrid bosses. 12 months later, the situation is completely different – he proved himself to be more than capable in Thibaut Courtois’ absence last season, but the problem for Los Blancos is that he wants to continue as a starter.
That won’t happen at Real Madrid, as Courtois will continue as no.1 going forward. That has led to strong speculation that Lunin could depart, and during an interview with Marca, he’s added some fuel to the fire.
“Will I stay at Real Madrid? Let’s see, let’s see. Obviously I want to continue, but… Well, the only thing I can say is that everything went well with Real Madrid… And that it is now in their hands. That’s what I can say about my future.
“I understand that everything is going to be complicated, because Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. But this also makes me better and stronger mentally. I want to play and be number 1, that’s normal.”
Lunin has been linked with Arsenal in recent weeks, although he’d likely be behind David Raya if he were to make the move there. It will be interest to follow his situation at Real Madrid over the coming weeks.
