Arsenal move on to new Real Sociedad target after cooling interest in Martin Zubimendi

A few months ago, Arsenal were seriously interested in a move for Real Sociedad pivot Martin Zubimendi. However, that interest has since cooled down, with the 25-year-old midfielder determined to remain in Donostia-San Sebastian. As such, the Premier League giants have moved on, but they’ve not gone far.

As reported by Marca, Arsenal are now very keen on Mikel Merino, Zubimendi’s midfield partner at La Real. He’s expected to be available this summer as a result of not signing a new contract at the Basque giants, and in recent weeks, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have been registered with holding an interest.

Merino has impressed during his cameo appearances for Spain at Euro 2024, and his future will be made clearer in the weeks after the tournaments concludes on Sunday. Real Sociedad appear resigned to him leaving, although it won’t be overly cheap – reports have suggested that their asking price could be in the region of €25m.

  1. Trying to make zubimendi jealous much? 😂 It’s like saying to an ungreatfull child, ” oh ok fair enough, I will give this wonderful opportunity to your brother instead if you don’t want it ” 😂😂😂 arsenal have no interest in merino! It makes zero sense! Especially as he’s 28 and as jorgi has signed an extension! Zubimendi might just be happy where he is! And merino will always feel second best.

  2. Well you got a point bro, but it depends on how one looks at it, because if you cannot get plan A then you move to plan B and if plan B is cheaper with more experience then I say Arsenal should go for it. Either way Partey will leave and Jorginho is there for a year and Merino can give us solid 3-4years for half what Zubimendi could cost us. I mean it’s the same as buying Kimmich coz of his age. Then we take some of the money saved from Zubimendi and invest it in a forward player, problem solved for this season. Lack of experience is what costed us in big games so if we get a player of Merino’s calibre and a proven goal scorer like Isak I promise you Arsenal will be making big strides.
