Former Real Betis defender joins Bologna, Barcelona miss out on 50% sell-on payment

Real Betis parted ways with multiple notable players on the 30th of June, upon the expiry of their contracts. Guido Rodriguez exited after 4.5 years at the club, and another to depart was Juan Miranda.

Miranda joined Betis from Barcelona on an initial loan deal in 2020, before arriving permanently in the summer of 2021. In the weeks before his contract expiry, he spoke of his desire to continue at the Benito Villamarin, but in the end, no agreement was reached, which ensured his exit earlier this week.

Miranda has now joined his new club. He was linked with Brighton and Porto among others, but he has signed for Bologna, who will play in next season’s Champions League. A three-year deal has been announced.

Barcelona had agreed a 50% sell-on clause with Real Betis upon Miranda’s permanent signing in 2021, but with him departing as a free agent, that has now disappeared – much to the frustration of those in Catalonia.
