Barcelona contract expires with no news on future

Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto is out of contract today, but there is still no news on his future as things stand. The 32-year-old had agreed a deal to remain at the club for at least an extra season, but the departure of Xavi Hernandez has seen the Blaugrana go back on their intentions.

Roberto, who has been at the club for nearly two decades, reached terms with Barcelona on a new deal, but clearly is not a priority for new coach Hansi Flick. Sport say that Roberto has been told that they do still want to keep him, but want to wait until towards the end of July to see if they have space in their salary limit to sign him to a new deal.

In the meantime, Roberto’s agents have received interest from Girona, Valencia and Sevilla, and are in talks over a move, although it is still thought that he would perhaps prioritise staying in Barcelona if they give the green light before he agrees to go elsewhere. All the same, Roberto is starting to believe that he is on his way out of the club. It is also believed that he would have options abroad.

The veteran still finds himself on the club’s website as part of the squad, but that is also the case for Marcos Alonso, who on Sunday the club bid farewell too. Yesterday the club also announced the exits of Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo, whose loan deals have expired, but then deleted the posts.
