Atletico Madrid officially change badge as fan fervour wins out

Atletico Madrid have officially reverted to their old badge, following seven years under an updated version. The gold trim has returned to the Atletico crest.

Back in 2017, Atletico took the decision to change the badge in order to make it more streamlined for marketing purposes, but it did not go down well with the fans. Immediately it was met with a negative reaction from the Colchonero support, and many have been campaigning for the return of the old badge since.

Earlier this season, the club held a referendum on the matter, and 88.68% of the nearly 70,000 fans that voted were in favour of a return to the old insignia. Despite the club warning that it would cost millions to replace all of the updated badges with the old crest again, the fans were adamant in their decision.

Many had sworn off buying Atletico merchandise with the new badge, and that should ease the impact a little. It is an important victory for the social mass of a football club though, when increasingly it seems as if fans are disenfranchised from their clubs. According to Diario AS, some fans even celebrated the changes outside the ground.
