Spain’s Euro 2024 knockout stage opponents revealed, tricky last 16 tie coming up

The Euro 2024 group stages concluded on Wednesday, and with it, the knockout stage fixtures have been decided. Spain now know who they will need to defeat to win their fourth European Championship.

Spain’s last 16 tie, scheduled for Sunday in Cologne, will be against Georgia. Hungary had been projected to be La Roja’s opposition, but because of Georgia’s victory over Portugal, they have replaced them. It’s worth remembering that the two teams faced off during Euro 2024 qualifying, with Spain winning a combined 10-2 across both matches – including a 7-1 win in Tbilisi.

If Spain progress from that match, they would face the winner of Germany and Denmark’s last 16 clash. La Roja and the hosts have been two of the best teams at Euro 2024 so far, meaning that possible match-up would be a very, very intriguing tie.

If Spain were to make it into the semi-finals of the competition, they would face one of France, Portugal, Belgium or Slovenia. The former two would be an incredible tough test, although de la Fuente and his players would still fancy their chances.

Among Spain’s possible final opposition are England, Italy and The Netherlands. They could also face possible dark horses in Türkiye, Switzerland or Austria.
