“We always seem to find a way” – Gareth Bale on Real Madrid’s Champions League aura

Real Madrid are already the most successful club in Champions League/European Cup history, and they can further solidify that on Saturday when they go in pursuit of their 15th title against Borussia Dortmund. There’s little doubt that Los Blancos are the most revered club in the competition.

But why is that? In an interview with The Guardian (via MD), former Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale, who won the Champions League five times during his time in the Spanish capital, believes that the club seem to have a significant psychological advantage over their competitors.

“Real Madrid have an aura in this competition. Even having played there, it’s hard to explain. Obviously this competition means a lot to the club and to the fans. It is the most valued competition and the main focus every year. But the fact that they keep doing it, even when it seems like they’re in bad form… We always seem to find a way to get back into a game and win it. Real Madrid and the European Cup have momentum behind them. Teams are afraid to play against Real Madrid and that’s a very important thing.”

Real Madrid will hope this kicks in again on Sunday when they take on Dortmund at Wembley. Another Champions League success would cap off an outstanding season for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who have already won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup.
