Sevilla agree terms with new manager on one-year deal

Sevilla are set to appoint Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta as their next manager, on a short-term deal, after he bid farewell to Las Palmas on Wednesday. The former Barcelona academy coach is taking on just his second senior coaching job.

As per Relevo, the much-rumoured talks between the two have come to an end, and Garcia Pimienta will sign a deal for the coming season, with an extension clause for a further year if Sevilla meet certain objectives, although these are no specified. He replaces the outgoing Quique Sanchez Flores, who was the club’s fifth manager in two seasons, and righted the ship with Sevilla threatened by relegation.

Part of Garcia Pimienta’s appeal is thought to be his ability to work with little in the way of resources. He will bring three of his staff from Las Palmas with him too. Los Nervionenses had been in talks with Jagoba Arrasate and Enzo Maresca at various points, but with neither of those options working out, the Catalan coach will take over the ailing giants.

Since leaving Barca Atletic three years ago after nearly three decades coaching at La Masia, Garcia Pimienta took Las Palmas up from Segunda in his first full season at the club. After a brilliant first half of the season, their disastrous eight-game losing streak threatened to plunge Las Palmas back into the relegation battle, but ultimately he has kept them up.
