Real Madrid fear top performer may be persuaded towards exit door

Real Madrid are set to sign a contract renewal with Andriy Lunin until 2029 this summer, but there are some doubts whether he will be at the club in a matter of months. It appeared he was content to compete with Thibaut Courtois for a spot in the team next season, yet the Belgian getting the nod over LLunin unin in the Champions League final could throw his future back into uncertainty.

According to Relevo, Lunin is not happy about the fact he will warm the bench in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, having been one of the key reasons they made it there in the first place. The Ukrainian believes he has legitimate reasons to be frustrated with Carlo Ancelotti as a result.

While it is nobody’s fault that has been isolated as he recovers from his fever this week, the fact he will only see his teammates again on the day of the game (he is set to travel Saturday to lower the risk of infection), it will do little to improve his sense of frustration. Lunin was keen to stay in the Spanish capital this summer, but Real Madrid fear that this could spark the desire to move, and certainly those advising him, from his father to his partner to his agent, could advise him to do so.

Part of the reason Los Blancos committed to a new long-term contract was to protect themselves against this exact possibility. If Lunin does seek a move, they will be able to demand a much higher fee for the 25-year-old. Equally, it is true that Lunin has proven himself a high-level alternative to Thibaut Courtois, who is coming off a serious injury and into his thirties, and finding someone of a similar level to play behind him seems a tricky task.
