Barcelona intend to honour promise made to veteran midfielder

Barcelona are expected to commence their squad planning for next season in the coming days, with Hansi Flick now officially confirmed as head coach, replacing the sacked Xavi Hernandez. One player who will be discussed is Sergi Roberto, whose contract expires at the end of next month.

With Xavi at the helm, Roberto looked nailed-on to remain at Barcelona, but his situation now looks uncertain, despite having been assured of his place in the squad for next season. However, despite Flick taking charge, there is unlikely to be a change from the original plans.

As per Marca, the idea remains for Roberto to sign on for another 12 months. At this stage, Flick and sporting director Deco are both happy for Barcelona’s club captain to continue for the 2024-25 season.

Roberto has received significant criticism from Barcelona supporters over the last few months, which has led to many calling for his contract to not be extended. This decision may not be favourable for them, but from a squad-planning sense, it makes sense – especially as the 32-year-old is one of the lowest-earners in the first team.
