Former Barcelona Sporting Director to turf out iconic Real Madrid defender on arrival at new club

Former Barcelona and Olympique Marseille Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta has been brought in at Porto by Andre Villas Boas, who recently ended decades of presidency by Pinto da Costa after winning in the elections. Their first move will be to move on a legend at the Dragao.

According to Sport, the 41-year-old defender will not be offered a renewal by Porto, something he had been promised by da Costa. He was a regular under Sergio Conceicao, but he too is on his way out of the club. Zubizarreta will no doubt be working on his replacement too, but he has already made a decision on the Real Madrid icon.

Pepe, despite his age, is in Roberto Martinez’s Portugal squad for Euro 2024, and showed again in the Champions League this season that he is more than capable of causing problems for Europe’s top forwards. It is not clear whether Pepe will decide to call time on a long and successful career after leaving his adopted home in Porto, or if he will continue next season.
