Barcelona to announce renewal of midfielder next month

Barcelona are set to renew the contract of captain Sergi Roberto for a further season, according to the latest coming out of Catalonia. Earlier in the season his departure had been assumed by some at the club, but his performances in recent months alongside his leadership qualities have seen him earn another deal.

Roberto appears to have won over Deco and Xavi sufficiently, who will keep the 32-year-old with a third one-year extension, which sees him continue as one of the lowest earners in the squad. The constant backing of his renewal from Xavi has helped Roberto’s decision, and he is equally behind his coach.

“We are all with him to the death and with the staff. There is a very good atmosphere in the dressing room, we are working well and it was the best option,” Roberto told Sport.

“Unfortunately, this year we have not won any titles, but I think that with the continuity of Xavi and the team we have, next season we will be able to compete for all the titles.”

As per the same outlet, Roberto’s renewal could be announced before the end of the season, which in Barcelona’s case will be the final weekend of May. The money has not been an issue in recent renewals, and the veteran is attracted by the idea of captaining the club as they return to the renovated Camp Nou next season.

Roberto has stated a desire to play in Major League Soccer at the end of his career, and is a semi-regular visitor to New York. With minimal resources, Barcelona have benefitted from his presence this season, and it seems unlikely they will find such a versatile, cheap, rotational piece in the transfer market that is comfortable being used whenever and wherever, while also balancing out the youth in the squad.
