Barcelona did not spend huge amounts during the summer transfer window, but they did bring in bargains – according to Xavi Hernandez, one of their signings cannot be valued sufficiently.
It’s hard to argue that Ilkay Gundogan does not have a price after he arrived on a free from Manchester City on the expiry of his contract. While some have found his start to life in Catalonia par for the course, Xavi explained that he is delighted with the veteran German.
“He is having a very good start to the season. How he has adapted, his leadership, he gives us poise [pausa], peace of mind, all the balls that pass through him, they improve… he is a priceless footballer. He gives peace of mind, tempo…”

It’s true that Gundogan has not necessarily put his stamp on a defined position, but that is because Xavi has moved him around so much. Used as a pivot, a central midfielder, and at times even an unorthodox winger, Gundogan has been asked to do a number of different jobs with the Blaugrana suffering significant injuries. At times, it appears as if Xavi simply moves Gundogan to where Barcelona are having most trouble, knowing he can often solve their problems.
