Having seemed impossible only a few months ago, a Barcelona return for Lionel Messi this summer now appears to be a genuine possibility.
The 36-year-old sees his Paris Saint-Contract contract expire at the end of the season, and despite the French champions being desperate to secure his renewal, it appears unlikely at this stage.
However, Barcelona’s ability to do a deal with Messi will depend on the healthiness of their financial situation. At present, the Blaugrana will be unable to bring the Argentine back to the club this summer, according to Javier Tebas, as per Sport. However, the La Liga President is hopeful that a deal will be worked out.
“Today, they cannot register Messi, but hopefully they get it done. There is plenty of time left. We are waiting for a viability plan, and they can sell players. Today, it is difficult.
“Hopefully, as a league, Barca will make the necessary moves for Messi to come, but we will not change any rules so that they can sign him. That is what we expect, but I would like Messi to play in La Liga.”
Barcelona are in the process of drawing up a viability plan to present to La Liga, while they are also reportedly preparing a contract to offer Messi in the coming weeks. There appears to be genuine optimism that deal can be done.
