On loan Milan playmaker Brahim Diaz is yet to declare which side he will play international football for, and it has become a public decision between Morocco and Spain. Morocco have made it clear that they would like to have Brahim, who was born in Malaga to Moroccan parentage has played for the Spanish youth sides growing up.
That does not mean to say he will continue doing so though. Achraf Hakimi famously did the same, but decided to declare for the World Cup semi-finalists as a senior player.
Coach Walid Regragui has publicly addressed the matter, comparing it to other similar situations.
“Being nationalised does not imply a social failure, but only the expression of a feeling. That Laporte has decided to play with Spain is not a failure of the French Republic, and I think that Laporte has the level to be in the final of a World Cup. Perhaps he felt more Spanish training as a professional in Spain.”
The comments were made to El Pais, and carried by Diario AS. Regragui went on to suggest that the normal conclusion would be for Brahim to play for Spain, comparing him to Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe.
“Why did Mbappe, having been able to, not play for Cameroon or Algeria, and instead chose France? The normal thing is that the children choose the country where they grow up. This is the case of Brahim Diaz. He is 23 years old and he has to decide who to commit to.”
Spain are currently in the process of nationalising Robin Le Normand of Real Sociedad so that he can play with La Roja. It has become a topic of conversation with Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United declaring for Argentina rather than Spain too, despite growing up in Madrid.
It’s more easier for Africans player to play for Europe or other continent because there’s a generational mental break wired against the black continent people. Everyone wants to be something else except being African.
