Unai Emery’s men needed to win. They were bottom of Champions League Group F with just a point to their name heading into the game, two behind Manchester United and Young Boys, three behind Atalanta.
Domestically, Villarreal have been tough to beat but are similarly finding it difficult to get points on the board. They’re 12th in the table with five draws and just eleven points to their name, six off Atletico Madrid and a Champions League place.

Yeremi Pino – celebrating his 19th birthday – fired Villarreal into a sixth minute lead, with Gerard Moreno doubling their advantage ten minutes later. Meschack Elia pulled one back for Young Boys in the 77th minute, but two goals right at the death from Alberto Moreno and Samuel Chukwueze confirmed an away win.
