Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos has dedicated Spain’s European Championships Under-21 title to the late Jose Antonio Reyes (pictured).
Ceballos started in La Rojita’s fifth ever lifting of the tournament – helping to defeat Germany 2-1 in the decider – and dedicated the success to the former Sevilla captain who, like him, also came from the Sevillian town of Utrera.
“I dedicate the title to my mother but especially to Jose Antonio Reyes, who also played in the national team and this tournament and also to his cousin, who is struggling to survive,” Ceballos told reporters as cited by Marca.
“When I do not play I am not the same person, I do not have confidence.
“I played here every minute and when I play I have confidence and I am a better player. But now we have to disconnect, charge the batteries and we will think about the future.
“Now we have the title and I am happy, we are now the champions and it is a just reward for a lot of hard work.
“Germany are a very good team but the important thing is that we were a team for ninety minutes and we achieved victory.”
