Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk was forthcoming in his praise of Lionel Messi after the Barcelona skipper's masterclass against the Reds in their Champions League semi final.
Messi hit 600 club goals for Barcelona with a brace in their first leg 3-0 win – including a stunning late free kick – and the Dutch international stated that an on form Messi is virtually unstoppable.
"Messi is a fantastic player, that much is obvious.
"Even when we were attacking, it is always difficult, as you know he is in the corner waiting to attack.
"He is the best player in the world and the extra level he has shown over the years proves this"
With Barcelona leading 2-0, Liverpool had chances to get themselves back into the game, however the Argentina international stepped up to fire home from a 30 yard set piece to end Liverpool's hopes.
"That goal shows where Messi is as a player.
"When he is at his best, there is nothing you can do to stop him.
"I am glad I don't play in Spain and have to face him every season."
