Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa could face a 12 game suspenion following his his red card in the 2-0 defeat to Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Saturday.
The Spanish international was shown a striaght red card by referee Gi Manzano, who stated in his post-match report that Costa insulted his mother, and that was the reason for the dismissal.
La Liga's disciplinary committee will now review the incident and the former Chelsea man can expect a ban of between four and 12 games if he is found guilty of misconduct.
Costa has denied using a derogatory term towards the referee and he is expected to appeal against the decision later this work.
If he is found guilty of directly using offensive language towards a match official then he can expect a hefty ban, however if it proven that he was not referring to Manzano, the league are expected to be leinient.
