Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos leapt to the defence of former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence from the UEFA’s awards.
Reports circulated that the Portuguese forward – who joined Juventus in a €100m deal this summer – did not attend because former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric scooped the award.
“I do not think Cristiano is unhappy because Modric won the award,” Ramos told reporters.
“Maybe he is unhappy because he did not win it, but not because a team-mate did instead.
“I think if there is one player who deserves this award then it is Luka.”
Modric won Best Player and Best Midfielder while Madrid’s success was throughout the categories, with Keylor Navas scooping the Best Goalkeeper award and Ramos lifting the Best Defender gong.
