Forward Mikel Oyarzabal has extended his contract at Real Sociedad until June 2023 with an increased release clause, it has been confirmed.
The 21-year-old is in high demand having netted 14 goals for a struggling La Real side last term and his previous contract contained a €60m release clause.
However, Basque rivals Athletic Club of Bilbao were keen on a move and were flush with cash after receiving €80m for the sale of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to Chelsea.
Diario Sport earlier this week that Los Leones were offering an ultimatum to the player: a ‘juicy contract’ which would stand ‘between five and seven years’ in length.
However, officials at the San Sebastian club have acted by agreeing a new deal with the player and handing him the number 10 shirt, vacated by captain Xabi Prieto this summer.
Prieto is one of a number of attacking exits from La Real this year with Carlos Vela and Sergio Canales also leaving, while Inigo Martinez joined Athletic Club for €32m in January.
