Valverde confirms Cillessen talks

Ernesto Valverde admitted he has spoken with goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen over his future at Barcelona and is hopeful he will stay.

The Dutch international’s contract at the Camp Nou runs through until June 2021 and contains a €60m release clause, while it is believed he wants more first-team football.

“It’s true that I have spoken to Jasper, but I cannot repeat what was said here at a press conference,” Valverde told reporters.

“It is clear that we count on him as I have already repeatedly mentioned – we value him a lot and we want him to stay.

“We need two good goalkeepers and we have them, so we want to keep going on this path.”

Cillessen, 29, joined Barca from Ajax in 2016 but has struggled to dislodge Marc-Andre Ter Stegen from the number one spot and has made just two La Liga appearances across two seasons.

In June, the goalkeeper said: “I think that I played well in the matches I had in the Copa del Rey.

“I need to wait patiently. The only thing I know is that Barcelona won't sell me.”
