Thibaut Courtois could wait until next summer for a move to Real Madrid and leave for free if Chelsea do not find a replacement.
The Daily Mail reports that the Belgian stopper has made it clear he wants to leave Stamford Bridge in the transfer window, which closes in England on August 9, with Madrid ready to pounce with a €35m bid.
However, if the Premier League club can not find an alternative to Courtois within the next week then they risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of next season, as his contract has just under 12 months to run and so far he has shown no sign of wanting to extend it.
Chelsea had been linked with a move for Roma’s Alisson, but the Brazilian has joined Liverpool, and Leicester City’s Kaspar Schmeichel and Jordan Pickford of Everton are also in their sights.
Courtois, 26, has still to return to Chelsea this summer after being granted permission for extra time off after playing for Belgium in all seven of their World Cup games in Russia.
