The RFEF has announced that Fernando Hierro is no longer Spain’s Coach and will not revert to his previous role of sporting director.
The federation said in a statement that Hierro has left to ‘seek new horizons and undertake new professional challenges’, while highlighting the ‘professional and human values of an extraordinary sportsman, to whom we wish all the best’.
The former Real Madrid defender joined the Spanish FA last November but was fast-tracked into coaching La Roja at the World Cup after Julen Lopetegui was sacked for accepting an offer to become Los Blancos’ next boss.
The 50-year-old led his country into the last 16 as Group B winners, but they went out in the first knockout stage to hosts Russia on penalties.
