La Liga old boys Mallorca completed the first step of their recovery on Sunday as they won promotion back to the second tier.
Mallorca’s 0-0 draw with Mirandes preserved their 3-1 win from the first leg in their promotion playoff, and they will be joined in the Segunda Division by Rayo Majadahonda next term.
The islanders had played 16 straight seasons in La Liga, during which time they finished third twice, contested the 2001-02 Champions League, won the Copa del Rey in 2003 and had former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o on their books.
However, they were relegated to the Segunda Division in 2013 and again last year after several campaigns of mismanagement, exchanging hands no less than three times.
Nonetheless, Mallorca seem to have found stability under American businessman Robert Sarver, also the owner of NBA side Phoenix Suns, winning their Segunda B group by an eight-point margin.
