Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has answered back after some people undervalued his club’s success this season.
The Blaugrana ran away with La Liga and also captured the Copa del Rey, prompting Bartomeu to defend Ernesto Valverde’s men achievements in what was seen as a thinly-veiled message to eternal rivals Real Madrid.
“We know some people from outside the club always to try to discredit us and take the importance away from what the team does,” said Bartomeu at the club’s Senate.
“Sometimes they talk about referees, guards of honour, and exaggerate controversies. But I can assure you that the football world truly values what we have done this season.
“When we win, they try to devalue it, so we have tried to keep away from that and just do our jobs.
“Barcelona win leagues, we win doubles, and I want to highlight the value and importance of that. This latest one is the eighth in the club’s history.
“We’ve won the best league in the world by a big difference – our seventh league title in the last 10 years – so it’s been an excellent campaign,” he added.
