Villar: Blame government for WC expulsion

Former Spanish FA (RFEF) president Angel Maria Villar insists he will not be to blame if Spain are excluded from next summer’s World Cup.

Reports in El Pais and El Mundo on Friday stated FIFA sent a letter to the RFEF, explaining La Roja could lose their tickets to Russia next summer if the government proceeds with plans to elect a new RFEF President.

Long-standing president Villar resigned over summer following his arrest on corruption charges by the Spanish authorities, with the organisation reportedly keen to elect a permanent successor.

“Only the Government is responsible if Spain do not play in the World Cup,” Villar told reporters.

“Spain not going to the World Cup would have nothing to do with me but I want them to go as the team have earned it.

“I am still the president of the organisation, not (the current interim president, Juan Luis) Larrea. He is only carrying out administrative duties in my name.

“My resignation has not solved anything and I was forced into this after my arrest when the RFEF had no evidence, but I am now fighting for the RFEF and for order.

“I have not committed any crimes and the court case will prove this, there are many people who are trying to bury me.

“It has been alleged not only me but my son, but he has not benefited as much as a Euro from any scheme.”

Villar added, ironically: “If I am back in my position at  the head of the RFEF, then (Spanish president, Mariano) Rajoy will be Julen Lopetegui’s assistant.”
