Thomas Vermaelen has explained several clubs wanted to sign him this summer but Barcelona would not allow him to leave.
The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at Roma in Italy but the Blaugrana reportedly did not sanction a further exit this summer.
“Barcelona told me I could not leave no matter what,” Vermaelen told Derniere Heure, as translated by Marca.
“There was interest from several clubs but they would not listen to any offers and now I cannot even play in the B team, so it is difficult for me.
“It would be fantastic to play some minutes for Belgium and maybe that will change the situation for me at the club, or improve it.
“The Coach (Ernesto Valverde) is happy with my performances in training and I understand that at Barcelona, you need strength in depth – four or five central defenders.
“I may get my chance through injuries or suspensions, so I must be ready.”
