Strikes from Borja Mayoral and Cristiano Ronaldo saw Real Madrid defeat Fiorentina to lift the Trofeo Bernabeu on Wednesday in Madrid.
It was primarily an exercise for Zinedine Zidane to give first-team action to fringe players and Ronaldo – who is midway through a five-game suspension – while the manager’s son also debuted.
The visitors took a surprise lead through summer signing Jordan Veretout, who’s shot went in off the post after a sweeping team move in the third minute.
In a pulsating opening, Madrid equalised three minutes later as Mayoral fired into an empty after a superb layoff from his Portuguese strike partner for the night.
Ronaldo then scored a fabulous solo effort which proved to be the winner; a goal reminiscent to the one netted in the Spanish Supercopa, he cut in from the left before firing an unstoppable right-footed effort into the top corner.
Goalkeeper Luca Zidane was one of a number of changes for the second half as the hosts hung on to secure the victory, 60 years on from their European Cup final win over the Italians.
