Newly-promoted Girona have completed the signing of Middlesbrough defender Bernardo Espinosa after triggering his €4m release clause.
The 28-year-old moved to Boro last summer due to the influence of then-boss Aitor Karanka, but he made only 15 appearances across all competitions in their ill-fated campaign.
The Colombian had previously spent the entirety of his professional career in Spain having played for Sevilla’s youth teams before stints at Racing Santander and Sporting Gijon.
Manchester City's director of football Txiki Begiristain reportedly played a huge role in completing the deal for the Catalan club, who are now part of the City Football Group – which includes City, New York City and Melbourne City.
