Tenerife have set up a Segunda playoff Final with Getafe by the virtue of their superior placing to Cadiz in the table.
Tenerife beat Cadiz 1-0 in Sunday’s semi-final second leg, but with the tie finishing 1-1 after extra time on the night, the islanders’ prevailed thanks to their fourth-place finish in Segunda, compared to their opponents in fifth.
Consequently, there was no need for a penalty shootout, prompting mixed emotions on social media.
“Without penalties, it’s not the same, you take away all the excitement…” wrote one person on Twitter.
However, another tweeted: “I don’t care about these teams, but if one finished higher in the League, they have more of a right to go through in a tie.”
Jose Luis Marti’s side were La Liga campaigners throughout the 1990s but have not played in the top flight since 2010.
