Spain have lost Alex Grimaldo to injury for the European Under-21 Championship and replaced him with Villarreal’s Rodri Hernandez.
A statement on the Spanish national team’s official website confirms Grimaldo suffered “a fibrillar rupture in the anterior rectus of the quadriceps muscle in his left thigh.”
The Benfica left-back’s place has been taken by defensive midfielder Rodri, who will join up with La Rojita at their Poland base in the next few hours.
Alberto Celades’ young guns kick off their European campaign on Saturday against FYR Macedonia, whom the seniors beat 2-1 in a 2018 World Cup qualifier last week.
Grimaldo is the second Spain player to leave the Under-21 squad after Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez, who must sadly undergo new chemotherapy.
