Athletic Bibao defender Yeray Alvarez will undergo a new course of chemotherapy after an abnormality was discovered in his recovery from cancer.
The 22-year-old will now miss this summer’s European Under 21 Championships for Spain and is ruled out of action until September at the earliest.
Having been diagnosed with testicular cancer in December last year, the defender underwent successful surgery and return to action for the Basque club in February.
However his treatment and checks have now picked up an abnormality, according to Athletic’s official club website and they report the player has asked for privacy as he undertakes the treatment.
