Ernesto Valverde says returning to Barcelona’s possession-based roots is more important than which formation he uses.
Barca adopted a more expansive style under Luis Enrique and switched to a 3-4-3 formation towards the end of the Asturians’s reign, but critics argued their trademark ability of controlling games was lost as a result.
“The 4-3-3 is a formation that Barcelona have used for some time now,” the Blaugrana’s new Coach answered in a Q&A session on Barca TV.
“It’s true that it’s not exclusive as they’ve played with a 3-4-3 and even 4-2-3-1 at times, but, regardless of the formation, what should prevail is their style of play, which is what has marked the legend of this team.
“It’s true that the formation helps, but the style isn’t marked exclusively by the formation.
“In recent years, when they’ve had more success, their way of playing has been based on their creative midfielders.
“That style is the one I have to adapt to, despite already knowing it, and in doing so, I have to persevere with it and then give it my own, personal touch.”
