Zinedine Zidane says while he is “happy” for Enzo’s first Real Madrid goal, his son is just one more player at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Enzo stole the headlines in Madrid’s 6-1 Copa del Rey thrashing of Cultural Leonesa on Wednesday as the midfielder scored after he came on, but father Zinedine was keen to stress how his parental relationship with the 21-year-old was different to his perception as a Coach.
“As a parent and Coach, I’m happy for his goal, but I’m also happy for everything we’ve done tonight,” the Frenchman said after the game.
“It’s an important day for those who made their debuts, and I’m also happy for Rubén Yanez because he’s worked very hard.
“Most importantly, we’ve achieved our objective, we played well and won the game. I’m happy, of course, as a parent for my son, but that lasts for two seconds.
“When I talk alone with him, I’ll tell him a few things, but as a Coach I think about the entirety, with respect to our opponents and all the players who got minutes.
“Casemiro? He had a little bit of trouble at first, but I’m happy with his return, he’s ready and it’s not easy for a player to be out two months.
“We have him as an option again, but in midfield we’re strong. He’s ready and at the team’s disposal. He’s strong and with us.
“Mariano? I’m happy for his three goals and the work he’s done, it’s been a very good night for everyone, but now we have to rest because the next game will come quickly.
“We’ll see what happens in January with Mariano. He wants to stay, he’s our player, had his chance and done very well.
“Clasico? We’re only thinking about that match, but whatever happens won’t be decisive.
“We’ll surely suffer so we must be well prepared, we all need to rest, me being the first, but no, it won’t be decisive at all.
“Messi-Ronaldo? Each of them, in their own way, are extraordinary. There shouldn’t be any debate about anything they do. I have Cristiano and I’m very happy to have him here.
“Odegaard in January? Anything can happen, we’ll see later. Odegaard has shown that at 17, he has character and personality. He did very well.”
