Sanchez: Castro will be our number 9

Victor Sanchez del Amo has confirmed he will reinstate Rubén Castro back into the Real Betis line-up and play him as a central striker.

Gus Poyet, Sanchez’s predecessor, came in for heavy criticism from fans for playing the 35-year-old wide on the left before dropping him to the bench, rather than playing him in his more accustomed role up front.

“Rubén is going to act as striker, we understand that’s where he can perform best and make the team’s effectiveness increase,” explained Sanchez.

“For us, Rubén Castro is a key player. One of our philosophies is teamwork. The team is the main priority; the sake of the team is above any individual.

“We are pleased to have among the squad talents such as Rubén Castro and others, but the team is above anything.

“There’s no doubt about it, but he’s going to be as important as the rest of players.”

Castro netted four goals in his first three league appearances this season, but has not found the net since.
