Atletico Madrid don’t want to sell Jose Gimenez to Real Madrid but if his clause is triggered, Villarreal’s Mateo Musacchio will be his replacement.
Mundo Deportivo reports that if Los Blancos want Gimenez they’ll have to meet his full clause of €65m plus taxes, taking the cost to almost €80m.
Atletico are aware of Madrid’s interest and have a contingency plan and while Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi has been mentioned, Musacchio would be the favourite.
Musacchio has a €50m clause himself but his contract expires in 2018, so the Yellow Submarine could be flexible, and the clubs have a good relationship as well, which could help.
The report adds that the only way Atletico would be likely to discuss letting Gimenez go to Santiago Bernabeu would be if Madrid were willing to talk about Alvaro Morata, who is an alternative to preferred target Diego Costa.
